Grammar and Spelling on Social Posts

The Importance of Spelling and Grammar on Social Media

Whether you grew up winning the county spelling bee or struggled with English all through school, there’s no reason to let yourself slack off on posting “good” captions on social media. Posting on sites and apps like Facebook, Instagram, or even Twitter means sometimes we get a little lax about our grammar. We’re all guilty of it, and there’s nothing wrong with that — unless you’re a business owner.

“But I want my social posts to be cool and trendy! I want to do what the kids are doing!” says the business owner. Sure, you can join in with the kids. Do the dab or floss away, but your spelling and grammar still matter.

Okay, we keep preaching that English skills matter when mastering social media.

Why English Skills Matter

Not only does it make you look like you know what you’re doing, but you’ll also earn more respect with a proofed and edited social post. It shines a more professional light on your company. It says, “I know what I’m doing and care about my image.”

Spelling errors, grammatical mistakes, and even misused words can cost you followers — and potential customers.

We understand that mistakes happen. Mistakes are okay every once in a blue moon. But as a business owner, it’s essential to understand that the slightest typo can change the entire meaning of a sentence.

Doing what you can to avoid errors (such as using tools like Grammarly or even spell check on Google Docs) can impress your literate customers. Education levels are rising and reaching new levels, and despite the lack of punctuation and good syntax on social media, people are gaining more knowledge. This means more people are aware of — and may even acknowledge — when you make mistakes in your posts.

So, what can you do to avoid these errors? Here are a few steps you can take:

  • Utilize free or paid plans with a tool such as Grammarly
  • Hire a freelance or contract editor to proof the posts you write
  • Hire a copywriter or marketing specialist to write posts for you
  • Enlist the help of a marketing agency that has an in-house copywriter or editor

There is always plenty of literature on grammar if you want to improve your English skills. Also, you don’t want to forget about the power of Google if you’re unsure of something. Your best bet is always to double-check yourself.
